Quilt Challenge 2015

In the interest of increasing and improving my skill sets I have set myself a quilt challenge. Don't panic, this isn't turning into a quilting page, just this one thing, the challenge of it. Each year the quilt shops in San Diego have a "shop hop" or "quilt run" you visit each shop on the list, there's 13, and at each shop you have your "passport" stamped, get a pattern for a quilt block, and a bit of fabric usually a fat eighth (1/4 yard of fabric, half the bolt width). It is a good way for me to get to know other fabric stores in my area, and each quilt store has a specific angle, some are heavy into wool, some specialize in reproduction fabrics, some are more into batiks, at any one time these stores might serve as a better source for materials than one of the big corporate monster stores.

This year I decided to set myself a challenge, at each store I purchased a half yard of fabric that is outside my usual comfort zone. I didn't buy fabric that was not attractive or repellent to me (and there are some of those out there), just something that I wouldn't normally work with, that my inner fabric critic would quirk her brow at, and say "a bit bold don't you think?" well, yes and that is supposed to be the point.

Some of the fabrics are deliciously out there, some are deep there's even a couple that cause me to question my sanity at the time of purchase, but all together, the meld nicely. All told I have 71/2 yards of fabric, that is way more than I need for a quilt so these fabrics may be turned into other things. And I have no clue yet what to do with them, I may have enough fabric to do a complicated set pattern like a feathered star and then it will be a double challenge as I haven't made that pattern yet. The third part of the challenge is I have just this year to do whatever I am going to do with it.
